NATIVE TALENTS – a Chamber Music Concert

15th July (Saturday), 8 pm – Townsmen Hall of the Old Town Hall
NATIVE TALENTS – a Chamber Music Concert
Tickets: 35/25 PLN (BUY TICKET)

The concert Recognised Talents to be held in the Great Hall of the Old Town Hall will present the results of musical co-operation between three eminent Polish artists, two of whom come from Toruń:

  • Anna Maria Staśkiewicz (violin), the winner of the third prize at the 13th International Wieniawski Competition in Poznań (2006),
  • Paweł Wakarecy (piano), a finalist in the 16th Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition,
  • and Marcin Zdunik (cello), the winner of the 6th International Lutosławski Cello Competition (Grand Prix, the first prize and nine other prizes).

The musicians will perform two piano trios, one by Andrzej Panufnik and the other by Franz Schubert.

The programme of the concert aims to present that particular composition by Panufnik, which is still relatively rarely performed (despite the recognition of the composer as one of the greatest Polish composers of the twentieth century), in the context of Schubert’s music and of his role as a forerunner of musical Romanticism.

Both compositions are known for its characteristic ethereal beauty and make one think of the Mozartian principles of aesthetic value in music. The 15-minute-long Panufnik’s Trio will be played as an overture to the magnificent musical form of the Trio in B-flat major by Schubert.

The Piano Trio by Panufnik opens the catalogue of his work as the single surviving pre-war composition by him (reconstructed from memory, since the original manuscripts perished in the Warsaw Uprising). The composer himself regarded this work as his ‘first serious achievement’. The work, charming as it is on account of its remarkable youthfulness, was a manifest sign of his maturity as a composer. In the words of the eminent music critic Jan Maklakiewicz: ‘We can sense in Panufnik’s music some firm and powerful tones, accentuating youthful rebelliousness, anxieties and endeavours, surrounded by fresh and sincere Romantic themes, resembling an incredibly rich and variegated palette of emotions. All of this brings to mind some analogies with Brahms. The rich inner message of his Piano Trio has been enclosed by the composer in an exquisite and colourful form.
