The concert programme will showcase compositions by Wojciech Kilar, drawn from some of the most significant cinematic productions in history: the films The Ninth Gate and Smuga cienia (The Shadow Line). These selections undoubtedly underscore the composer's exceptional prowess in the realm of film music. Additionally, we will be treated to Kilar’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, a mature testament to his remarkable pianistic abilities. This concerto, structured in three distinct parts, artfully melds Kilar’s artistry with his unique style while paying homage to centuries-old traditions within the genre.
The evening's pinnacle will be Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's Copernican Symphony No. 2, a bold continuation of the vocal-instrumental symphonic cycle initiated by Beethoven in his Symphony No. 9. Górecki’s composition serves as a delightful tribute to the Universe, created in honour of the 500th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus’ birth. It also pays homage to the groundbreaking discoveries of the Toruń-born astronomer, resulting in a captivating work replete with symbolism and ingenious musical craftsmanship by the composer. The composition unfolds in two parts: the first intricately explores the mechanics of the cosmos, awe-inspiring in its complexity, while the second part adopts a more contemplative stance, inviting reflection on the universe. Górecki employs a variety of intriguing musical techniques, drawing inspiration from Biblical psalms and Latin passages from On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, among other sources. In the final section of the work, the composer incorporates the original 15th-century anonymous song Laude digna parole.
