DIXIE BROTHERHOOD is a traditional jazz band and a three-times finalist of the Złota Tarka festival in Iława. The group is inspired by bands which created the New Orleans jazz style.
The band’s repertoire is dominated by songs composed in this very style by musicians such as Edward Kid Ory, a trombonist and pianist, Jelly Roll Morton, a pianist, composer and arranger, and Louis Armstrong, a trumpeter and singer. The composition of this band from Toruń, which is a sextet with a bass tuba, also refers to the tradition of street performances in New Orleans, which were popular at the beginning of the 20th century.
In June 2015, Dixie Brotherhood recorded an album called TRAIN TO NEW ORLEANS, with a guest appearance by Janusz Szrom, a leading Polish jazz singer. The album got very good reviews from both musicians and the audience and one of the songs was played by Polish Radio in a show called Three quarters of jazz, hosted by Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski in Radio Three.
In autumn 2015, the band started working on a new project. The album entitled W KINIE was a great challenge for the musicians from Dixie Brotherhood. The idea behind the project was to record film songs related to Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province. The musicians from Dixie Brotherhood decided to look at the film material as if it was a jazz standard. In this way, film music was interpreted anew and well-known film music themes were given a new sound that reminds us of New Orleans. The band invited Paulina Grochowska, a young and very talented singer, to record vocal parts. She not only proved to be up to this difficult task, but also enriched the album with her unique voice, which in every song reveals a different tone to the listener. All arrangements are original ideas of Dixie Brotherhood.
