the play "Janko the Musician"
In the year devoted to the memory of the Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz, we invite you to our play Janko the Musician, a theatrical adaptation of his short story of the same title, directed by Jacek Pietruski. The story develops in Polish countryside of the nineteenth century. Its main character is Janko, a frail and ailing boy, who is particularly sensitive to the music of his surroundings, but on account of his poor health is not capable of helping even in the simplest chores. His mother usually sends him to take care of their cows, and Janko “then listens to the nature and waves his shepherd stick across his arm as if he was playing the violin”. Unfortunately, due to his social background, his dream of playing the violin cannot come true. But one day the boy notices that the door of the count’s manor house are left ajar and peering through them he can see the enticing view of a genuine violin hanging on the wall. Blind to the potential consequences, he barges into the manor’s veranda only to touch the instrument he dreams of…
The short story ends sadly, but this adaptation will present a slightly different ending than that of the literary original…
The play will resound with beautiful violin music by such eminent composers as A. Dvořák, N. Paganini, N. Rimski-Korsakow and H. Wieniawski. The plan of the set design was created by Aneta Tulisz-Skórzyńska, whereas the musical background and sound realisation was prepared by Waldemar Dziomba.
See you at the show!
