The Classical Music and Cinema concert offers an intriguing repertoire that not only features timeless classics of classical music, deeply embedded in popular consciousness, but also includes iconic hits from the silver screen. This September’s event promises to be an unforgettable experience for those with a special affinity for the mysteries concealed within the night sky, bathed in the ethereal glow of moonlight. The programme will be a rich tapestry of baroque popular music, cinematic journeys amidst starlit landscapes, jazz influences, and other remarkable pieces that will paint an extraordinary picture of the diverse relationships that connect artists to the musical cosmos. 

In this carefully curated repertoire, we cannot overlook the grandeur of Richard Strauss’s Sunrise Fanfare, a majestic composition frequently employed in cinematography. Here, a distinctive rising fanfare finds its culmination in a resplendent sunlit chord, creating a truly breathtaking musical moment. Shortly thereafter, we’ll embark on a romantic jazz journey with the beloved classic Fly Me to the Moon by Bart Howard, offering listeners a distant voyage to unearthly realms of human sensitivity. The evening will also feature a beautiful swing ballad by Glenn Miller, alongside the delicate notes of Ludwig van Beethoven’s iconic Moonlight Sonata, one of the most celebrated sonatas in the history of music. Among the iconic moon-inspired compositions, Henry Mancini’s famous Moon River will take centre stage, a melody infused with unbridled nostalgia for an idyllic childhood. This timeless piece has graced numerous film productions and has been performed by countless musicians. Stevie Wonder’s eclectic style, blending elements of funk, jazz, blues, and rock and roll, will provide a captivating contrast, as will Herb Alpert’s compositions drawing inspiration from Latin American themes. Harry Warren’s entertaining hits and an array of other musical gems are sure to guarantee a delightful journey for our audience as they reach for the stars. Adding a splendid touch to the evening will be selected excerpts from George Friedrich Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks and Water Music, representing the trend of open-air popular music during the Baroque era. These compositions, originally performed in parks and royal estates, provided a melodic backdrop for the enjoyment of vast crowds during special events. To elevate the experience even further, the concert will be enriched by John Williams’s iconic music from the legendary films E.T. and Star Wars, productions born from a collective fascination with the boundless cosmos.
