Karol Lipiński (1790–1861), probably the most famous Polish musician (violinist and composer) of the pre-Chopin era, often put on a par with Paganini. Appreciated by Hector Berlioz, Clara and Robert Schumanns, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner, he published his pieces in the most important publishing houses and remains ‘conspicuously absent’ from Poland’s musical culture. The lecture accompanying the recital will present the life of Karol Lipiński and his significance for European culture.

The lecture will be given by Barbara Mielcarek-Krzyżanowska, music theorist, musicologist, doctor of history. Since 2001 she has been working for the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, where she actively participates in a number of research projects. Her main area of interest is the musical culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, in particular the work of Zygmunt Mycielski. She regularly participates in conferences in Poland and abroad.
In the years 2001–2015 she cooperated with the Youth Centre in Bydgoszcz as a lecturer and juror at numerous events; since 2011 she has been a juror of the musical knowledge competitions organised by the Toruń Symphony Orchestra. In 2017, she co-created an e-learning project under the European Knowledge-Education-Development Funds programme.

The repertoire of the recital will include Lipiński’s Polonaise in A major No. 1 Op. 9 and Caprice No. 3 Op. 29 as well as Paganini’s Caprice No. 11 Op. 1 in the interpretation of Voytek Proniewicz and Piotr Kopczyński.

The violinist Voytek Proniewicz graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw in 2005 in the class of Professors Mirosław Ławrynowicz and Andrzej Gębski. He has won many scholarships and awards, including the scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (2001) and the scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage ‘Young Poland’ (2009), the Award of the President of the City of Gliwice for Culture and Art (2013) and the scholarship of the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship in for culture (2018).
The artist made his debut with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005. Since then he has given concerts with many orchestras, including those conducted by Jan Krenz, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Tadeusz Wojciechowski and Mariusz Smolij. He has given concerts in many Polish cities, as well as in Vienna, Paris, Brussels, St. Petersburg, Munich, Vilnius, Palermo, Hanoi, Bangkok, Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Caracas.
He has recorded three albums for Naxos: Karol Lipiński String Trios Op. 8 and Op. 12 (2018), Ferenc Liszt Works for violin and piano (2014), Pupils of Chopin (2011), and musical pieces to accompany the film entitled Chopin – The Space Concert.
In May 2009, Voytek Proniewicz and the Sinfonia Viva Orchestra premiered Krzesimir Dębski’s Dos Lid Far Jidisze Fidl for violin and string orchestra. In July 2010, in a duet with Janusz Olejniczak, he performed at the Veranos de la Villa festival in Madrid with the Camerata Vistula ensemble.
The artist has given concerts at the Warsaw festivals ‘Silence Zone’ and ‘Klasycznie na trawie’, the Polish Music Festival in Krakow, the Jerzy Waldorff Summer Festival in Radziejowice, the Mozartiana Festival in Gdańsk, the Andrzej Nikodemowicz Festival in Lublin and the European Music Festival in Vietnam.
Winner of the 3rd prize at the Ludwig van Beethoven International Competition in Hradec nad Moravici (Czech Republic, 1998), 1st prize at the Stanisław Serwaczyński National Competition for Young Violinists in Lublin (2002), 3rd prize at the 15th International Kiejstut Bacewicz Chamber Music Competition in Łódź (2004), as well as a distinction at the 6th Karol Szymanowski International Competition in Łódź (2005).

The pianist Piotr Kopczyński has been a lecturer at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw since 2012. He graduated from the same university in 2008 in the piano class of Professor Piotr Paleczny and in chamber music under the direction of Professor Maja Nosowska. He perfected his skills during master classes in Poland and abroad, with such eminent musicians as Arie Vardi, Viera Gornostajewa, Alexei Orlowiecki, John O’Connor, Kevin Kenner and Vitaly Samoshko. The artist was also a scholar of the Polish Children’s Fund, the Minister of Culture and Art, and a two-time winner of the ‘Musical Forum of the Young’ of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw.
As a chamber musician, he performed with such artists as Katarzyna Budnik-Gałązka, Ryszard Groblewski and Janusz Wawrowski.
As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed in many prestigious concert halls in Poland and abroad, such as the National Philharmonic and the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw, the Artur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Łódź, the Lviv Philharmonic, the National Philharmonic in Kiev, Universität der Künste in Berlin and the Polish Radio Concert Studio in Katowice.
